Public Media Defunded, But the Fight Isn’t Over

In the early hours of July 18, the House of Representatives passed the Senate-amended Rescissions Act, eliminating all previously approved funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in Fiscal Years 2026 and 2027. The bill passed by a vote of 216–213.

This legislation defunds public media for the first time in our nation’s history. It is difficult to express the depth of disappointment this moment brings. This is not just a policy decision – it’s a decision that undermines a system hundreds of millions rely on for emergency communications, educational content, local news, and community connection.

And yet, through every twist, vote, and challenge in this process, one truth has stood tall: Americans overwhelmingly support federal funding for public media, and viewers and listeners across the country did everything possible to save it.

Over the past several months, more than three million emails and calls were sent to Congress from constituents across the country. Supporters from every state raised their voices in defense of public media – sharing what their local stations mean to them, speaking out against the cuts, and urging lawmakers to stop them. Americans showed up in force.

This outcome is not a reflection of public apathy. It’s the result of a narrow vote that flew in the face of overwhelming public support. The grassroots did not fail. In fact, the only reason this fight went as far as it did – and came as close as it did – is because so many people stood up for public media and kept the pressure on.

As devastating as this moment is, it is not the end.

The FY 2026 appropriations process is already underway, and there is still a path to restore public media funding. It will be difficult, but with the strength of this grassroots movement, it is achievable.

To everyone who took action: thank you. Your advocacy, energy, and commitment were extraordinary. At every turn, you made public media impossible to ignore. You reminded Congress – and the country – that these services are essential and that the communities they serve will not stand by quietly when they are threatened.

You never backed down, and neither will we.

Here’s how you can help right now:

This movement is just getting started. Thanks for standing with your local stations.
