Why Does Your Voice Matter?
Local public media stations are a critical part of how communities stay informed, safe, and connected.
For decades, the majority of federal funding for public media flowed directly to local stations through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). That investment, about $1.60 per person each year, supported local station operations, programs, and services, and made it possible for stations to reach everyone in their communities, including rural, Tribal, and underserved areas, regardless of income, internet access, or geography.
CPB has been defunded, and without restored federal funding, some local public media stations will be forced off the air. Others are already cutting back core services that communities rely on, including reducing broadcast hours that affect emergency alerting, scaling back local news, local and cultural programming, and educational services and resources for teachers and students.
Congress will continue to make decisions that will shape public media’s future. Restoring federal funding will require continued public support and action.
