On Wednesday, June 19, 2019, the U.S. House of Representatives approved increased federal funding for public media as part of their Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 minibus spending package.

Minibus Bill Results

Thanks to everyone who contacted their lawmakers in support of federal funding for public media this year. You helped affect the outcome for FY 2020 minibus spending package, which includes:

  • Full funding for Interconnection, the backbone of the public media system that allows your stations to broadcast programming and support emergency communications.
  • Increased funding for Ready To Learn, which supports the creation of rigorously researched and effective early educational content for children and associated community outreach.

The House of Representatives’ support of public media funding is a significant victory and the culmination of your ongoing outreach to your lawmakers.

What’s going on with the Senate version of the bill?

The Senate Labor-HHS-Ed Appropriations Subcommittee is still assembling their version of the spending bill.

If you’re represented by a Senator serving on the Subcommittee, we urge you to email your Senator to request robust public media funding in their spending bill.

While we made strides in the House, there are still a few more critical steps before the funding is finalized.

Over the next few months, we’ll be fighting to ensure robust funding is in the Senate draft bill and the final compromise bill.

Thank you for advancing robust public media funding in the House of Representatives.

Please continue on our journey to secure federal funding for public media by signing up for our updates. We will let you know when and how to act to protect the local stations and programs you love.
